New vocabulary. Silica, alumina and lime –– words needed in secondary school science. The clay is piled into a pug mill and fired at 870 degrees C. Hard for kids to get their heads around that figure!

History of brickmaking back to Roman times. New innovations such as colours and now, of course, the need to adjust the chemistry of the process because we must reduce that horrendous temperature.

Brick Biz is an easy to use unit of work. The language is pitched to this age group. Writing tasks, some research to do especially for pictures.
