“Word Lists – Phonics”
Grade 1

“Word Lists – Phonics” Grade 1  are lists of words with common spelling patterns. These lists have no connection to Sight Words and were put together independently.

Download and print on A4.
These lists develop speed with quick recognition.
Suitable for Grade 2 as well expecially if the words’ meanings are unclear.

Things to consider :

~~Display and Say~~

 “Say the word, repeat the word” and children learn the spelling families and patterns.
Frequency leads to success so read them through together regularly.  Encourage the student/s to sound the words out.

No 1 has 3-letter words mainly, with short vowels, such as rat, fed, tip, pop and cut.  There is one page for each vowel.

No 2 presents new spelling patterns. Words ending in -ay,  -ai-, and ow. A brief guide at the top of each sheet.

No 3 has:

-ea- and -ai- vowel teams, -ow endings such as yellow and other words with two syllables.

• -ee- vowel team, and -ea- words that make the sound as in head.

-oa- vowel team as in boat, and
-ow- such as show and other words with one syllable, -aw-  such as dawn, and -au- such as because.

 No 4:

• takes the student/s into new spelling patterns. Words with -or-, -ir- and -ur- are listed, such as short, girl and church.  Words with -ore are included, such as shore, and –oar such as boar.
• There is a collection of words that shows a child the effect of the ‘bossy e’, such as hug and huge, cut and cute.
• Words beginning with qu is the last sheet and includes most words that primary school children will come across, such as queen and quarter.
